Yesterday the Government announced its commitment to updating and strengthening data protection laws. The new Data Protection Bill will implement General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in full, putting the UK in a strong position to secure unhindered data flows once it has left the EU.
The announcement gives businesses the clarity they need about their new obligations and provides everyone with the confidence that their data will be managed securely and safely. Businesses could face fines of 4% of global turnover or up to £17m in cases for the most serious data breaches. New criminal offences will be created to deter organisations from either intentionally or recklessly allowing someone to be identified from anonymised data.
Key features of the new Bill include making it simpler to withdraw consent for the use of personal data and allow people to ask for their personal data held by companies to be erased.
