Financial incentives to take on apprentices

As the coronavirus outbreak continues, the Apprenticeship service is working hard to support employers with some exciting new initiatives.

Incentive payments for employers

From 1st August incentive payments have been introduced for hiring a new apprentice. Employers who hire new apprentices between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021 could get:

  • £2,000 for apprentices aged 16 to 24
  • £1,500 for apprentices aged 25 and over

Employers can apply from 1 September 2020, and spend the payment on anything they need to support their organisation. This is in addition to the £1,000 payment already given to help employers meet the needs of some groups of apprentices in the workplace.

The incentive will also apply when employers consider hiring apprentices who have been made redundant during the pandemic. These apprentices already have valuable skills and experience, so they’ll make an impact straight away.
