About a third of Charnwood’s population live in Loughborough; a thriving university town and an important centre for business, commerce and retailing.

Shepshed is a significant settlement to the west of Loughborough, with a further string of settlements extending south towards Leicester along the valleys of the River Wreake and Soar. The Charnwood Forest area, part of the National Forest, has a distinctive character and attracts many visitors, particularly to Bradgate Park.

Charnwood is home to Loughborough University and Loughborough College of Further Education – both critically important for the local economy. Other major employers in the district include 3M Healthcare, Fisher Scientific, Lafarge, Intelligent Energy and William Davis.

The mixture of urban life and rural tranquillity makes the district an attractive place to live, work and visit.
