Over 270 pupils in Leicester and Leicestershire had the opportunity to network with over 100 employers at an exciting and very different type of careers event, which took place at Leicester Racecourse on Friday 4th November 2016.
The students aged between 13 and 18, took part in the region’s largest ever Careers Speed Networking Event – the first of its kind organised by the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP).
Twelve schools / colleges, who are part of the LLEP’s Enterprise Adviser Network, each sent pupils to the event. The morning session saw students ‘speed network’ under timed conditions with employers from a whole host of different businesses and public sector organisations such as Hastings Direct, ASDA, Highcross Leicester, Laing O’Rourke, Next, British Gas, NHS and Mattioli Woods.
Pupils spoke to different employers in bursts of six minutes. In that time they asked employers about their job roles, organisations and the steps to employment.
Nick Pulley, Chair of the LLEP said, “It’s the first time the LLEP has taken on anything like this – certainly on this scale. The concept stems from a similar Careers Networking event held in London which was also incredibly successful.
“We believe there needs to be more engagement between schools and businesses and our work with the Careers and Enterprise Company will help to improve this over the next few years. School pupils don’t often get the chance to speak to ‘real employers’ and ask the questions directly, so this event provided the perfect forum for them to find out all sorts of interesting things about business and what they need to do to get on that first rung of their career ladder.
“Over 270 young people all talking at the same time ran surprisingly smoothly and each student had the opportunity to speak to several different employers. It was an incredible sight and the room was separated in different coloured zones which looked fantastic!”
