Skills Support for the Unemployed (sector based initiatives)

ESF programme helps adults into opportunities across key local sectors 

The Skills Support for the Unemployed Programme is managed by Derby Business College Training.

Throughout the life of the project, 441 unemployed 16+ year olds will be supported with education and training that helps them to enter into sustained employment across LLEP area key employment sectors.

Working with people on an individual basis or in groups, all support is tailored to the needs of individuals and businesses in the local area.

The programme activities to help people into work, education and apprenticeships include:

·         Help to identify and address the barriers individuals face in moving into work such as confidence

·         Support with work experience

·         Support with basic skills

·         Support with job-related and  job seeking skills

·         Individuals will gain qualifications, training and support to get a job.

Case Studies

The programme has helped many local adults to move into sustained employment. Here are a couple of case studies:

Client A

Workpays subcontract some delivery of SSU (Skills for the Unemployed) from Derby Business College. Workpays source local employers in the LLEP area who have multiple and regular vacancies, and also work to aid local people to achieve their short term career goals, helping them with careers advice and applications, with a view to them attaining their long term goals. Customers who engage can tap into help with customer service units, retail, business admin and CSCS card, to help them with employability and sector skills.

Client A, a single parent with 3 young children,  joined the Workpays programme, after  a gap in employment due to health issues and raising her children. Client A was really keen to secure employment as a teaching assistant, but had struggled to get anywhere with this. She decided to be open minded about other sectors and started to complete units to help towards retail roles, with Workpays tutor support. Client A gained confidence, knowledge,  and a qualification and also made new friends through the course. Her work consultant arranged for 4 week placement at B&M stores in Leicester. After this work experience, Client A was delighted to be offered a permanent part time evening position. Initially Client A was a little unsure about the hours but accepted and is finding this a good fit around her child care commitments.

Since starting work, Client A is happier, more confident, is financially better off and is making new friends. She is also doing a part time degree!

 

Client B

Derby Business College met a learner at the Charles Street Job Centre on the 1st March 2017, whilst promoting their SSU (Skills for the Unemployed) Business Administration/Retail programmes to potential learners.

Derby Business College told us, “This learner was a very jolly soul with hidden barriers, which were disclosed during her initial assessments. Having left an abusive relationship, fleeing with her children, she had not been allowed to study for any qualifications, so felt that she would struggle around people and her confidence was at an all-time low. This learner confided in the staff and also in the ladies who were with her in the centre during her study times.”

“Over time, her confidence grew and grew, as she gained new skills and was 100% committed to her training and course. We would regularly meet to discuss progression routes as she had her heart set on finding a part time position to enable her to work around her children’s needs. With hard work and determination she completed and achieved Level 1 Employability with a lot of emphasis on interview preparation and participation and Level 1 Award in Business Administration and Retail.”

“Immediately after completing her course, she gained sustained employment with Bet-Fred, she flew through the interviews and her confidence has gone onto new levels.”
