As you may have heard I am due to step down as Chair of the LLEP in a couple of months. I’ve reached my limit of six years of service on the Board and it’s been an absolute pleasure. It’s been an exciting and rewarding period of time working closely with the private and public sector and liaising with government. On a personal level, it’s been very beneficial in growing and using networks to drive economic benefits for the region.
I’ve enjoyed seeing projects taken from concept to delivery using discrete LLEP funding. For example, the £126m Growth Deal which has been invested in a number of projects across the city and county to drive growth including £9.5m towards MIRA Technology Institute (MTI) which will open for students this September and see an outstanding 2,500 training places each year when fully operational. Investments like this provide an essential solution to the skills and jobs needs in the local and regional area.
Another highlight of mine has been leading on the creation of the Midlands Engine Investment Fund (MEIF) during quite a challenging period of time with the Referendum. It’s fantastic to see the £250m investment fund already making a difference and boosting SME productivity across the region.
This has been a very fulfilling role and fantastic for professional development. I’ve been able to participate and play a part in the region’s economic success. As I step down the LLEP is on the lookout for the next Chair and I recommend this role to any business leader who is prepared for a challenge. This is an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact locally and nationally.
