We had a fantastic event last week called ‘Meet the Sector’, which was all about raising awareness of the array of opportunities across sectors in the LLEP area. We were fully booked and over 75 school and college careers leads, heads and teachers attended to hear our latest skills and labour market update. The event was coordinated as part of a wider agenda to better link education and local businesses, and also to raise awareness of the labour market resources that schools and colleges tap into.
The event was part sponsored by our Careers and Enterprise programme team, and we’ve had some excellent feedback from delegates about how inspiring they found it to hear from representatives from employers including IDI Gazeley (Magna Park), University Hospitals Leicester NHS, Winvic (SEGRO Roxhill) , Caremark, Santander, Highcross Leicester and the National Space Academy.
Attendees also gained practical solutions for employer engagement to enhance the curriculum and are more aware of resources that can be used to advise students about future labour market trends. This includes ‘What Work Leicestershire’, a labour market information guide for schools and colleges. The LLEP coordinates this guide each Autumn to help young people with the career planning and sector awareness. It is based on extensive research on types of businesses and sectors in the local area to inform a useful guide providing information to help local people to find suitable career paths.
It also includes practical information about where to access careers advice such as the National Careers Service, and local events that can help, such as the UK’s largest free skills and careers event, The Skills Show. There are also employability tips from local employers, information on the changing world of work, and information on pay. There are also some free lesson plans produced by the National Careers Service that can be utilised to embed the learning in the guides. You will also see that the LLEP is collating short films from local employers, talking about their organisations; again this can help to convey careers and employability to young people.
We are looking to release an updated ‘What Work Leicestershire’ brochure soon so keep your eye open for it!
