Superfast broadband is an essential core infrastructure that is critical for business growth and innovation; helping to boost GVA, improve competitiveness and increase jobs.
The project has delivered superfast fibre broadband to homes and businesses across Leicestershire that did not have access to it before, or would not have access to it in the next three years, due to market failure. The project forms part of a national government initiative which commenced in 2011.
The project supports the government’s national objective to ensure that 95% of UK premises have access to superfast broadband by 2017. Deployment of superfast broadband is also a key strategic priority for Leicestershire County Council and district councils, as outlined in the County’s Local Broadband Plan.
The LGF funded component of the Superfast Leicestershire programme has been delivered on time and on budget. The outputs achieved are better than expected and take-up of newly available fibre services are significantly improved on anticipated levels.
The Superfast Leicestershire programme delivered fibre broadband access to almost 8,600 homes and business in 2016/17, bringing total delivery on the programme to over 72,000, including 6,000 businesses.
The programme has primarily utilised Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology. FTTC involves running fibre optic cables from a telephone exchange or distribution point to a roadside fibre cabinet (DSLAM) which then connects to the existing copper telephone network.
This involves connecting the fibre DSLAM to a new or existing copper roadside cabinet which in turn is linked to the home or business using VDSL or similar technology that can deliver much faster speeds over shorter distances.
The programme has installed 392 fibre DSLAMs to date which are now providing customer access to superfast broadband. Over 280 miles of new fibre cabling has been deployed across the Leicester and Leicestershire with upgrades undertaken to 17 fibre telephone exchanges across the region.
